On a cold day, this match had frequent rain showers which made tricky conditions at times. It was a much better performance than at Leeds. Gateshead worked hard to get back into the match after York had opened the scoring. Daniel Ranson was fouled in the box and Lewis Reynolds powerfully converted the penalty. Constant changes to keep the squad warm in the conditions backfired as the match went on and Gateshead couldn’t track the runs of the powerful strong York centre half. The league matches are approaching and the strongest starting team for the first league match has become evident.

The feeling today was that we turned up but didn’t turn up. After getting to Leeds, watching the under 11’s match then it was the year 7’s turn. Unfortunately the performance was just not there today. Both teams created chances however only Leeds took theirs. Two goals in the first half and one in the second were good enough to seal a defeat for Gateshead. Gateshead suffered badly after Liam Oxley was forced to come off with a tight chest in the first half and then his replacement, Jamie Wheeler came off in the second half.

Lewis Terrell worked hard in both positions he played with Carl Taylor putting in some good tackles.

Newcastle started the brighter and arguably had the better of the first third going goals up before Connor McGowan hit a great strike to pull one back. Lewis Reynolds capped his excellent captain’s performance with well taken goal as Gateshead passed the ball so well that Newcastle couldn’t get it for long periods. A strong performance from Liam Oxley caused Newcastle problems. Substitutes added fresh legs and one of them Pete Smith got into a great position to score two good goals.

This was an excellent performance across the whole squad.
